Al Shehab Foundation for Comprehensive Development is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and qualified candidate for the following position:

Position: Project Accountant - Foundation for a Sustainable Model of Economic Empowerment for Vulnerable Women Project. Duty station: Cairo.

Duration: Annual Contract renewable based on good performance and availability of funds.

Background and summary of the project:

Al-Shehab Foundation for Comprehensive Development is a non-governmental organization working on the development of informal areas in Greater Cairo, and is currently working in one of the largest informal areas, Ezbet Al-Haggana. Ezbet Al-Haggana community suffers from extreme poverty in the services and facilities, along with the low awareness of the public and the low levels of education, economic and social conditions. While unemployment represents a critical challenge for all segments of the population in the area, young women often find themselves contributing to, if not the main breadwinner for the family. The only economic opportunities available to them as unskilled labour are in the precarious informal sector doing odd jobs such as street vending or domestic work where incomes are insecure and where they lack any social or legal protection. Al Shehab Fou has been working with this group of women for several years and this project will build on this past work to further enhance their economic and financial skills, contribute to increasing their incomes and gain access to labour rights. Al Shehab Foundation is implementing four-year project in partnership with Drosos Foundation. The overall objective of this project is to enable marginalized women in Ezbet El Haggana to improve their incomes by delivering quality training in cooking for 225 women and certification from the Ministry of Manpower. This will enable their access to new and better-paid income opportunities whether based in their homes or in the homes of clients and will be complemented by training on basic economic skills including financial literacy and marketing. Of the total trained, 30 of the most promising women will be engaged in the kitchen, a social enterprise that will ensure a steady source of income for beneficiaries, worker rights and the sustainability of future programming for the partner organization. In parallel to the main interventions, the project will engage the children of female beneficiaries in a safe space that helps them develop skills for a better future. The project will directly contribute to:

a) The establishment of a kitchen as a social enterprise supporting income generation for women and the partner.
  An appropriate business model is developed and rolled out.
  The kitchen is set up with appropriate operational and management systems.
  Marketing enables the social enterprise to reach its revenue targets. b) Women’s economic empowerment through skills development & income generation.
  225 women are trained and certified in cooking and basic economic skills.
  30 women are engaged in the social enterprise and an ownership model ensures their participation in decision-making.
  A safe space engages the children and youth with skills building activities. c) The partner is fully capable of running a social enterprise.
  The partner has acquired experience in the food/catering industry.
  The partner’s financial systems support the running of a social enterprise.

Major Duties: Based in Cairo, the Project Accountant will work under the direct supervision of the Project Manager and under the overall guidance of the Al Shehab Foundation’s Financial Manager. 1- Responsible for daily book keeping of the financial entries with proper supporting documents within a sound financial system. 2- Prepare the monthly bank reconciliation reports for different bank accounts. 3- Update the fixed asset register according to the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). 4- Implement and enforce the internal control measures in the project. 5- Prepare a variety of detailed accounting, statistical, and financial statements or reports requiring analysis and interpretation; and works with the Auditor/Controller and with data processing personnel regarding work of fiscal and clerical personnel in making entries, and performing other fiscal record keeping work. 6- Participate in the preparation, evaluation, justification, and maintenance of budgets and budgetary controls. 7- Review and analyzes grants, contracts, and proposals for financial soundness and adherence to the GAAP. 8- Recommend and assists in the implementation of new or revised accounting systems, procedures, and records. 9- Report to the Project Manager with regards to any matters related to his/her accounting work, as well as any suggestions/recommendations on financial management during the weekly staff meeting 10- Prepare the quarterly financial reports to be presented to Drosos Foundation.

Qualifications: i. Degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited university. ii. Experience in working with NGOs is recommended. iii. Ability to work in a team and in a challenging environment. iv. Neutrality, flexibility and respect for diverse populations is required. v. Strong sense of initiative and dedication, and respect for time and punctuality. vi. Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. vii. Excellent knowledge of written and spoken Arabic. viii. Good working experience with computers, including Microsoft Office.
